ASHLEIGH & BURWOOD PRODUCT USER GUIDE

Please read the instructions below before using your Fragrance Lamp:

GENERAL INFORMATION

How to use your lamp

  1. Stand your Lamp on a spill-resistant surface. Remove the snuffer-cap and stone/wick assembly. Using your funnel, fill your Lamp 2/3rd full with one of Ashleigh & Burwood’s Lamp Fragrances. Always keep the Lamp upright when filled to prevent spillage.
  2. Insert the stone/wick assembly into the lamp. Cover the stone with the snuffer-cap and allow the wick to soak for 20-30 minutes. If the stone is not covered the Lamp Fragrance will evaporate.
  3. Place your Lamp on a heat resistant surface, away from combustible materials. Remove the snuffer-cap and light the stone. Ensure the stone is sat firmly in the neck of the Lamp before lighting. Never leave a burning Lamp unattended.
  4. Blow out the flame after 2-3 minutes and place the decorative crown over the hot stone. Never cover the open flame with the crown or snuffer-cap.
  5. Enjoy the purifying benefits of your Fragrance Lamp for up to 30 minutes. The stone will remain hot (without a flame) as it continues to draw fragrance through the wick.
  6. After 30 minutes, ‘turn-off’ your Lamp by removing the decorative crown (Caution – it may be hot) and cover the hot stone with the snuffer-cap. This will stop the catalytic process and prevent the Lamp Fragrance from evaporating when the Lamp is not in use.

NOTE: The Lamps can be known as Catalytic Lamps, Catalytic Fragrance Lamps, Effusion Lamps, or simply as Fragrance Lamps.

We recommend when changing fragrances that you remove the wick from the Lamp and allow the wick to air-dry before placing into another fragrance.

We also recommend when using the Lamp, not to burn the Lamp until it runs dry as this can damage the wick.

Care for your Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamp

The outside of your Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamp can be easily cleaned using a proprietary furniture or glass polish. Always ensure that the snuffer-cap is on the Lamp and that the top is cool before cleaning.

Cleaning the stone/wick assembly

Use this method if you have the following issues:

  • Your wick won't light
  • Your wick won't get hot
  • Your wick won't remain lit for 2-3 minutes
  • You're not receiving a good fragrance throw

If you're experiencing the above issues, your wick could be blocked.

  1. Take your stone/wick assembly out of your Lamp and put into a ceramic bowl/cup (be careful when doing this as your wick will be soaked with Lamp Fragrance), ensure the surface underneath is covered.
  2. Pour your Lamp Fragrance into your bowl/cup and fill until 2-3 cm full.
  3. Cover with cling film and put into a cool dark place. Leave for 24 hours.
  4. Place the wick back into your Lamp, bearing in mind the rope part of the wick will be soaked in Lamp Fragrance, so again be careful with any dripping.
  5. Replace the snuffer cap and leave for 10 minutes.
  6. After 10 minutes light the wick. Please use caution as initially the flame will be quite high (up to 3 inches).
  7. Use your Lamp again as normal!
Lamp Fragrance Safety Cap Instructions

WHAT IS A CATALYTIC FRAGRANCE LAMP?

The original Lamp technology dates back over 120 years, to when a French pharmacist discovered the catalytic combustion process, and the Lamps came to be widely used to help disinfect and purify the air in hospitals, thus cutting down on infection transmission.

In the 1920's designers were commissioned to create aesthetic bottles to be offered to private consumers. The Lamps, which had previously cleansed and purified the air exclusively in an industrial setting, now came into the private home.

Ashleigh & Burwood have taken the original technology, tweaked and refined it over the course of the last 10 years or so, to create what we believe is the best system out there.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started taking hold, Ashleigh & Burwood immediately wondered whether our product could be useful, and began researching a microbiological laboratory that could do the type of testing that was needed. At the end of January 2020, Ashleigh & Burwood commissioned a specialist US laboratory to begin testing our Lamps specifically for their efficacy against coronavirus. In June we received the verified results in the final test report.

The Fragrance Lamp diffuses fragrance and purifies the air via a method of operation known as Catalytic Combustion.

The Catalytic Lamp works when the catalyst (platinum) present on the stone part of the wick assembly is heated, which creates a catalytic reaction with the Neutral Refill or Lamp Fragrance and oxygen, which is self-sustaining while there is constant fuel and oxygen supply. The liquid in the Neutral Refill or Lamp Fragrance is drawn up the cotton wick via capillary action into the porous ceramic burner head, where the catalysis takes place, oxidising some of the liquid and releasing the balance into the air (with the fragrance, if included). The surface operating temperature of the stone can be around 350C (around half the heat of a candle flame), which destroys virus and bacteria that come into contact with it. The heated liquid rises into the air, and through convection currents is diffused quickly throughout the surrounding air. This technology is particularly effective at ensuring the liquid is emitted in ultra-fine particles which rise quickly and distribute rapidly, far smaller than droplets produced by a spray, or standard evaporation, and at a far greater rate.

LAMP EFFICACY

Compared to other home fragrance products, the key thing that a Fragrance Lamp does when perfuming a room, is not just to release fragrance into the air, but also at the same time to actively destroy malodour particles. Products such as sprays, candles and diffuser simply attempt to mask background odours, but when the fragrance fades the undesirable odour will still be present. A Fragrance Lamp can actively remove the malodour. The Lamp actively purifies, cleanses and perfumes the air in a wide area. Common odours in the home produced by cooking, pets, tobacco and exercising can be safely and effectively removed by using the Lamp.

Another aspect is the ability to distribute fragrance faster and further than any of the other product formats. During the catalytic reaction, the stone/wick assembly acts like a tiny engine actively and rapidly diffusing fragrance into the air, with the added effect of the convection current helping the fragrance to spread much more quickly through the air.

Does the Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamp really work against airborne 'bugs'?

PARTS OF MY LAMP

  • The Crown covers the hot stone to prevent accidental contact. Various designs are available.
  • The Snuffer-cap covers the catalytic stone. This prevents Fragrance from evaporating when the lamp is not in use. It is also used to cover the hot stone(to turn the Lamp "off").
  • The Retainer is a small metal clip that holds the stone, collar and wick together. You should never remove this clip.
  • The Stone is a special porous ceramic material coated in platinum and other rare metals.
  • The Collar supports the stone and secures the wick in place.
  • The Wick carries fragrance from the body to the stone.
  • The Assembly is a group name for the wick, collar, stone & retainer.
  • The Neck is a metal crimp attached to the Lamp Body which supports the Assembly.
  • The Body is the main part of the Lamp that holds the Fragrance.

You can order the small or the large wick/stone assembly from the shop where you originally bought your Lamp.

If you are unsure of the wick size you need please see the bellow size guide and compare to your current wick.

Styles of wicks

Two styles of large wicks on the left hand side and two styles of small wicks on the right hand side.

Never pull the wick out by the stone, always hold the collar and remove the whole Wick/Stone Assembly in one piece. Always ensure that the Stone is completely cooled before touching it.

USING MY LAMP

There is no particular reason why the Lamp cannot be used in any room in your home, as long as it is on a flat, stable surface away from combustible materials and out of reach of children or pets.

Yes, provided you follow the safety instructions and keep your Lamp out of reach, so that there is no risk of the Lamp being knocked over or touched. Always place your Lamp on a flat stable surface. Remember that the stone is hot when in use. Always ensure the crown is on the Lamp when it is in use to prevent accidental contact with the hot stone.

It depends on the length of time that the Lamp is in use, plus also additional factors such as airflow. We recommend for an average size room (20m2 floor size) to use the Lamp for 25-30 minutes (and it is important not to over-use the Lamp, because the fragrance release is extremely powerful, not to mention using up the fragrance rather too quickly).

We would recommend using your Lamp for 30 minutes at a time to achieve effective cleaning of the air. We do not advise using your Lamp for longer than 45 minutes at a time as this can cause damage to the wick. If you’d like to use your Lamp for longer periods, we would recommend using the Lamp for 30 minutes, snuffing it out and leaving it to re-prime for 30 minutes before lighting again. This cycle of 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off can be repeated as frequently as you’d like, however, we wouldn’t normally suggest using more than twice a day.

You should expect a flame of 3-4 inches (75-100mm) the first time you use your Lamp. The more you use the same stone, the smaller the initial flame will be but it will always produce a flame of at least 2-3 inches (50-75mm) to get the stone up to working temperature.

Using the funnel provided, you should fill your Lamp 2/3rd full of Lamp Fragrance. Once filled cover with the snuffer-cap and leave to prime for 20-30minutes. Take care not to overfill or spill the Lamp Fragrance. If you do overfill the Lamp, carefully pour the excess back into the fragrance bottle (using the funnel) and wipe down the Lamp with a damp cloth.

No, You should never leave your fragrance lamp on for more than 40 minutes. This is to ensure the longevity of the Wick Assembly

If you know you will not be using your Lamp for extended periods, it is best to leave it empty. Pour any surplus Fragrance carefully back into the original bottle, using the funnel supplied with your lamp. Leaving a Lamp filled for extended periods may cause fragrance to accumulate in the stone making it difficult to light. If you have any problems lighting the Stone after extended periods without use, follow the instructions below for "How do I clean the Stone".

If you wish to change Lamp Fragrance, remove the stone/wick assembly (placing it on a spill-resistant surface) and carefully pour remaining liquid from your Fragrance Lamp back into the original Lamp Fragrance bottle, using the funnel provided. Make sure the Fragrance Lamp is completely cool before you do this. Allow the wick to air-dry overnight. We do not recommend using your Fragrance Lamp until it is empty as it can damage the wick.

The Lamp will last indefinitely as long as the body or neck is not damaged. The question normally means "how long will the stone last?" Provided it is used exclusively with Ashleigh & Burwood's Lamp Fragrance, the instructions are followed and the Lamp is not misused, then each assembly will last for around 250 uses. We are still testing stones that have passed 300 uses and they are working at their optimum level.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If your stone should become accidentally damaged your Lamp will not work efficiently. Fit a new stone/wick assembly before using your Lamp again.

Fragrance is not being delivered to the stone. Check that your Lamp contains Lamp Fragrance, this is especially important with opaque lamps. Check also that the wick is inserted fully into the Lamp so that the bottom of the wick is in the fragrance. After checking this, put the snuffer-cap on the Lamp for 20-30 minutes to prime it and then re-light.

The stone has become clogged with fragrance. This is most likely because the snuffer-cap was not put on the Lamp when it was not in use. Fragrance has concentrated in the stone making it difficult to light. Follow the instructions below for "How do I clean the Stone?"

It is most likely that the flame was extinguished before the stone had reached its working temperature. Put the Snuffer-cap on the Lamp and leave it for 20-30 minutes to prime. Light the stone again and allow the flame to burn for a full 2 - 3 minutes before extinguishing. Please note that after igniting the stone, the catalytic effect is optimised between 2 and 3 minutes. If this does not work it is likely your stone has become clogged. Follow the instructions below for "How do I clean the Stone?"

There is a small amount of water in the Lamp Fragrance. Occasionally, especially if there is a draught, this water vapour and/or elements of the fragrance compound itself can be seen coming from the Stone.

FRAGRANCES

The basis of the Lamp Fragrance, and the important fuel which keeps the catalytic process working, is an alcohol called isopropyl alcohol. A very common alcohol, it is the same form of alcohol which is commonly used in hand sanitisers for example. The other ingredients are distilled water, and the fragrance compound itself.

90% of each Lamp Fragrance isopropyl is alcohol and it is this, just as in hand sanitisers that is effective against coronavirus. The virus is surrounded by a lipid membrane, and the antimicrobial effect of the alcohol vapour is attributed to its ability to dissolve the lipid membranes and denature the proteins of the virus. The virus cell literally falls apart when exposed to alcohol vapour.

No, it doesn’t. All our Lamp Fragrances are made from 90% isopropyl alcohol, and the addition of the fragrance doesn’t affect the action of the alcohol on infectious agents. However certain ingredients in fragrances, such as some essential oils, can also have enhanced effects.

When the Lamp is used in accordance with the instructions, the amount of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) released into the air is well within the safe limits for adults, children and pets. The majority of the IPA is burned during the catalytic combustion process which breaks it down into simply water and carbon dioxide, and the remaining IPA that is released into the air diffuses very rapidly.

The OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) limit for exposure to IPA is an airborne concentration of 400ppm (parts per million). Using a large Fragrance Lamp for the recommended 30 min period, in an average sized room, results in an airborne concentration of IPA around 19ppm, assuming zero airflow. Allowing for normal household conditions with a small airflow, the concentration will be even lower than this.

No, Lamp Fragrance is specifically designed to be used in Ashleigh & Burwood Fragrance Lamps only. It is not suitable and will not be effective if used in Reed Diffusers, Oil Burners, Scent Hubs or Pot Pourri.

Our main range of Lamp Fragrances use a blend of natural, nature identical and plant extracts as components. Our typical fragrance composition is similar in style to most high-end designer perfumes for example, or many of the well-known high-end designer candle brands. None of our fragrances are tested on animals, and we are wholeheartedly against testing products on animals. Our Essential Oil Collection of Lamp Fragrances (product codes PFL950 – PFL957) use only 100% pure essential oils as the fragrance component.

Unfortunately, not. The fragrances are specially developed by Ashleigh & Burwood to work efficiently with your Fragrance Lamp. Using other types of fragrance could be dangerous and will damage the stone.

Yes, you can mix any of the Ashleigh & Burwood Lamp Fragrances to create your bespoke scent.

Fragrance Lamps are incredibly effective at fragrancing the air (unlike a room spray for example where the fragrance droplets will fall to the ground after a few minutes) and you will find that the fragrance lingers for several hours in the room after the Lamp has been stopped. If you feel that it is the fragrance itself which is too strong for your liking, then it is possible to dilute down one of our Lamp Fragrances, using the Neutral (unfragranced) variety – this is product code PFL900 for the 250ml bottle, and PFL928 for the 500ml bottle. You can mix in any ratio you like until you find the level which best suits you. For smaller rooms, you may also consider using for a short period of time.
